Amin Tohmaz, PE, CBO, Assistant Director Appointment
Congratulations to Amin Tohmaz, PE, CBO, on his formal appointment to Assistant Director, Development Services Department.

For the past seven months, Amin has served in this role as Interim Assistant Director supporting the Field Services Division.

Amin will continue to lead Field Services by directing, managing and overseeing the activities of the department's Building Inspections and Code Enforcement sections.

DSD Lends Support to Community Hit by Harvey
Aransas Pass, Texas, near Corpus Christi, felt Hurricane Harvey's full fury on Aug. 25, 2017, when the category 4 storm made landfall.

As one might expect, this coastal community is working hard to recover from the damage Harvey left behind. Many buildings were destroyed beyond repair or had extensive damage.

In an effort to help our fellow Texans, the City of San Antonio's Development Services Department sent some of our building inspectors to assist in the cleanup effort.

"This storm hit close to home," said Mike Shannon, DSD Director, "we are happy to offer our assistance to get our neighbors back into their homes and buildings safely."

Since Sept. 13, the inspections team has conducted more than 200 inspections and completed over 20 plan reviews, assisted the Aransas Pass building department by answering contractor questions daily and met with hundreds of citizens who want to get back into their homes. The team also generated close to 300 permits by helping the one Port Aransas Code Enforcement Officer with patrolling the area, while informing contractors and homeowners how to obtain the necessary permits. During this time, our inspectors have conducted several inspections for gas and electrical reconnects and worked closely with the local utility company.  With our help, the Aransas Pass School District had children back in school, reoccupying their buildings, on Oct. 16.

"I speak weekly with the Aransas Pass Interim Building Official and she has expressed to me many times how grateful she is for our assistance," said Mike Constantino, DSD Administrator. "She has been very pleased in our overall efforts and in the professionalism our inspectors have shown week in and week out. The citizens and community members of Aransas Pass are very grateful to DSD and the City of San Antonio."

The inspections team was scheduled to return to Development Services on Oct. 27, but may be asked to stay into November.

Earlier this month, the City Manager held a recognition breakfast to thank the inspections team and other DSD staff, along with employees from other city departments, for going above and beyond to assist in the response to Hurricane Harvey.

Here's what you said about us...

Santos Dimas,  Plumbing Inspector, Field Services
After hearing how important this inspection was, Santos took it upon himself to return after no one answered to inspect our project.  I am sure with his schedule he did not have to do that. His dedication to service will assure the safety of our worshipers! WELL DONE SIR!

Andrew Espinoza, Development Services Manager, Plan Review
Mr. Espinoza's help has been great on my projects in your city. I have worked with cities all over the country for the last 30 years. I have found SA to be the most friendly and helpful city I have worked with. Mr. Espinoza has been approachable, courteous and helpful.

Angela Cardona, Planner, Land Development
Angela Cardona did an outstanding job in guiding me and my business partner through the planning process and filling out the various forms. She reviewed the application and made appropriate suggestions. I was very impressed with Angela Cardona, her knowledge and understanding. She is a great representative of Development Services!

Stanley Sells, Plans Examiner II, Plan Review
Stanley was a life saver. He made himself available multiple times over the phone and in person, allowing me to guide my engineer and help him meet the building requirements. He took the time to discuss different options and what might work out best, and he helped me get done quicker and save money.

Lisa McKenzie, Graffiti Program Coordinator, Code Enforcement, Field Services
I just want to let you know your folks did a great job abating the graffiti at this property. They were prompt, called me back! (which no other department has done in all my other requests), and did a great job.  Please share our thank you!

Pete Gomez, Planner, Land Development
I am very pleased with the prompt information he provided me. It is a great relief that customer service can be offered without having to go in person to the city offices. Thank you again for your service.
