Dear
Neighbors,
This week's
Northeast Neighborhood Alliance Potluck at the Northeast Senior
Center was a big success. We heard from Speaker of the House and
District 121 Representative Joe Straus on what we can expect in the
next legislative session, and a presentation on a proposed bond
project for a Hardberger Park Land Bridge. Additionally, the
Northeast Neighborhood Alliance took the time to recognize the 65th
Infantry Regiment, collectively known as the Borinqueneers,
and congratulate them on receiving the Congressional Gold Medal
earlier this year. We would like to thank all who donated dinner,
drinks, or desserts for the potluck dinner.
You might be
wondering why several news stations are running a story on
panhandling recently. This week, my Council Consideration Request,
or CCR, on reviewing our city's ordinances and procedures on
panhandling will be discussed in Governance Committee today. We
look forward to City Staff's review of other cities' best
practices, and how we can take action to help deter this behavior. I'd
like to thank all the residents and business owners who brought
this issue to my attention. While panhandling is not an issue
limited to District 10, we want to protect the work we've done in
revitalizing the Nacogdoches/Perrin Beitel corridor, where this
problem has popped up.
In two weeks,
the City of San Antonio will once again celebrate National Night
Out. If your neighborhood has not yet registered for hosting a NNO
event, please contact Jo Alexander as soon as possible. In the next
two weeks, we will be preparing bags of District 10 information and
National Night Out gear to be passed out during NNO events. Please
let our office know how many will be attending your NNO event and
we will have a bag waiting for you at our field office. Both Jo Alexander's
and our office's contact information are inside this
newsletter.

September Boards and Commissions Meeting
This past weekend our District 10
Boards and Commissions representatives held a very special meeting.
We asked them to assist with a test of the new prototype version of the
city's river barge. We boarded the new barge downtown on the River
Walk and asked each representative to give us their opinions on
various aspects of the trip. For example, the city needs feedback on
accessibility, seating, stability, noise, barge size, etc. This
information will be very helpful in learning the strengths and
weaknesses of the design.
I would like to thank all our
Boards and Commissions representatives who took the time out of their
very busy schedules to assist us with this test program. These
individuals have each volunteered to represent District 10 on a wide
variety of city related activities. Their assistance has kept us
informed of issues that have a direct impact on our residents and our
entire community.
We also need to recognize our
friends at VIA for assisting in transporting all of us to this event.
We saved a lot of fuel and trouble by having everyone take the same
bus down to the River Walk.
As all of you know, the river barge
program is a key element in introducing our wonderful River Walk to
visitors to San Antonio. We highly recommend that whenever you have
out of town guests, you should try to schedule a river barge tour.
It's a superb opportunity to take great photos and learn a lot about
our beautiful city and its history.

AACOG to host Inaugural Governor's
Business Forum for Women
On September 28, 2016, from 8 a.m.
to 2 p.m., the Alamo Area Council of Governments and the Office of
Texas Governor Greg Abbott will host the Inaugural Governor's
Business Forum for Women. The Forum will be held at the Whitley
Conference Center, Oblate School of Theology, 285
Oblate Drive, San Antonio, TX 78216. Doors open at 8:00
a.m., followed by an 8:30 a.m. welcome from San Antonio Economic
Development Foundation President and CEO Jenna Saucedo-Herrera.
There will be presentations by the Governor's Office, Texas Workforce
Commission, Workforce Solutions Alamo, and panels including Women
Entrepreneurs, Women in STEM, Women in Leadership, and Women in
Finance/Real Estate. There will be networking opportunities,
and Small Business Awards will also be presented at the
luncheon. The forum will end at 2:00 p.m. with a keynote by
Austin-based Business Owner/Entrepreneur Geneva Grainger-Build Your
Empire.
Cost is $25 per person; corporate tables of 8 are $250. To

Your Freedom: Register to Vote at the San Antonio Public Library
With a national election upcoming
in November, the San Antonio Public Library recently launched a new
voting campaign branded "Feed Your Freedom" to encourage
the San Antonio community to register to vote before the upcoming
deadline of October 11, 2016. In addition to encouraging all citizens
eligible to vote, the Library is targeting high school juniors and
seniors who may have just turned 18 years of age to register to vote
before the deadline. The San Antonio Public Library wants to remind the
public that all library locations are official voter registration
sites and invites you to visit one of our 28 locations to register to
vote.
"We are pleased to participate
in this civic responsibility by having many of our locations serving
as early voting sites and polling locations," said Ramiro
Salazar, Director of the San Antonio Public Library.
"Encouraging voter registration and offering our libraries as
convenient places to vote is aligned with our mission to 'transform
lives through information, imagination, and ideas'."
As a premier resource for
educational support, self-directed learning, and literacy, the
Library plays an important role in providing quality, non-partisan
information to voters. On Tuesday, September 27 the San Antonio
Public Library will join thousands of volunteers, celebrities, and
organizations to celebrate National Voter Registration Day. The
community is encouraged to visit mysapl.org
or their closest library location to access voting information which
will help them choose a candidate.

September 2016 activities:
- Jones
Maltsberger Rd opened August 27, 2016. Roadway asphalt
completed.
- Completion
of gas lines on Jones Maltsberger Rd and Redland Rd.
- Roadway
widening with grading work and asphalt laid on Redland Rd.
- SAWS
water main and tie-in work at Jones Maltsberger Rd completed.
- Concrete
crews worked on the forming of the Jones Maltsberger Rd
head-wall, retaining walls and bridge rail.
- Utility
crews working at drainage outfall on Redland Rd across from the
Northern Oaks Church area.
- Water
adjustments on Redland Rd.
- Traffic
control adjustments thru-out project.
- Hauled
away debris from site.
Planned activities for the next 3+ weeks:
- Testing

to continue roadway widening and grading on Redland Rd.

National
Night Out in District 10
As
October draws closer, we encourage all our neighborhoods to register
for a National Night Out event. If you would like more information on
how to register, please contact Jo Alexander at jo.alexander13318@att.net.

Councilman Gallagher or his staff to attend your National Night Out
event, please email us at District10@sanantonio.gov.
And, without
further ado, a note from Jo Alexander:
Please advise all your residents to
turn on their porch lights for National Night Out (NNO). This
has been a long-standing tradition in most of the US cities, and it
shows that we support our law enforcement personnel. In fact,
this is how Minneapolis, Minnesota wins number 1 in the nation.
They get everyone to turn on their porch lights and ask many of them
to register with the Minneapolis Police Department.
So, let's give them a little San Antonio, Texas competition!
Let's try to get everyone is District 10 to turn on their porch
lights to show support for law enforcement. This includes those who
are attending celebrations at other locations. Even if they are
staying home all night, residents can send in a registration form to
SAPD and put "Porch Light" on the top. Actually
keeping our porch lights on every night is a great idea.
According to our District 10 SAFFE Officers, this is one way to deter
crime.
So, don't turn out the lights;
let's keep the party going! If you have any questions, please
